“Every breath you take

And every move you make

Every bond you break

Every step you take

I’ll be watching you.”

Lyrics from a Grammy award-winning song years ago by the Police.

If you are a fan of the show Ted Lasso, it was highlighted in a recent episode as one of the characters mourned her father’s death. It was a song he frequently sang to them as a family.

The character, Rebecca, had a complicated relationship with her father. He was unfaithful to her mother. Rebecca knew it but didn’t know her mother knew and carried deep hatred and resentment towards her dad, which brought the day of his death into an even more painful place for her. As she stood at the front of the church, she struggled to find the right words to say about her dad.

With the spoken word failing her, she began to sing,

“Every breath you take . . .”

She stumbled a few seconds, tears consuming her more than words.

After a bit of awkward silence, Ted, a friend and employee, began finishing the line for her. Before you knew it, the entire congregation was singing with her, and they finished the song together.

If we’d been in that moment together, no doubt we would have deemed it a “sacred moment,” and we would have known that God was present through the words, the breaths of all in the room.

No doubt you’ve had some of those moments in your life. When God “shows up” through someone else’s breath!

A powerful lesson we can all learn is that God is present with us in every moment, every breath.

What about right now? Take a second, pause, breathe in deeply and exhale slowly, thinking, “This breath is God. God is with me. God is in me. Always. Now. Forever.

May you feel the peace, hope, strength, and joy that assurance brings!

Grace and Peace,

Andrea
